Ep 26 - Rebrand It Like Beckham, with Priya Rani Kumar

June 30th, 2021

On this episode we talk about Bend It Like Beckham (2002), a selection by Priya Rani Kumar: comedian, actress, improviser, and owner of the cutest little pup! Listen closely for tiny-dog toe-tapping, and if you’re a patron at Patreon.com/BringPopcorn, you can even see a picture of one of the cutest dogs in the world!

The coming-of-age film Bend It Like Beckham was marketed as a “sports rom com” -- but is that accurate? We don’t think so. Listen for why!

Episode 25 - Candleshoe Club, with Lindsay Armendariz

June 3rd, 2021

Hold on to your hats, cuz you’re in for a wild ride on episode 25! Featuring special guest Lindsay Armendariz, a training coordinator and program developer for children’s mental health — and a dear, close, special, personal favorite colleague of mine! In this episode we discuss Lindsay’s childhood favorite, CANDLESHOE (1977)! This little-known live-action Disney flick was Jodie Foster's 13th film overall, and 6th (and final) film with Disney.

Candleshoe is about a streetwise Foster child (get it? heh heh) who is forced to grow up fast to survive — but she makes cons look cute, and there's treasure, friendship, cute grandmas, and racism, because Di$ney! We had a blast diving down memory river with Lindsay and we know you will too. Pop some kernels and enjoy!

Episode 23: Now and Then, Ironically - with Hannah Lyman

March 28th, 2020

Greetings, creamy corn niblets! It is here: The annual droppings. A single episode. You know what, there just might be another one this year. Who knows what the future holds? No, seriously. Does anyone know? It might be good to know some of this shit in advance. I have a gift for you, dear cobs: this episode is 100 percent certified COVID-19 FREE. That's right. This was recorded before we knew what was happening, in the Before Times. Pre-Quar. In advance of the Great Isolation. This recorded discussion contains zero mentions of coronavirus, quarantine, or Tiger King. I could've added a little intro on it, but I didn't; I wanted to keep it pure for you. This is a safe space. Did we wash our hands carefully after we used Catbox Studios' screaming toilet? Sure, but it wasn't for fear of death, unlike now, and forever after. In this sweet, innocent little time capsule of an episode, Mixtape Majesty and bio-informatics scientist and educator, Hannah Lyman, lovingly tear apart the 1995 coming-of-age film, Now and Then. WHY? You'll have to listen. -- SPECIAL THANKS: Catbox Studios and Ovacord for manning the recording and support station! MUSIC: Adult Problems by Richard and the Julians Copyright Richard and the Julians 2015; Popcorn Frog by MC Chris Copyright mc chris llc 2013
